Compton-thick X-ray absorption in the Seyfert galaxies Tololo 0109–383 and ESO 138–G1
We present analyses of the ASCA X-ray spectra of two Seyfert galaxies, Tololo 0109– 383 and ESO 138–G1. In both cases, spectral fitting reveals two statistically acceptable continuum models: Compton reflection and partial covering. Both spectra have strong iron Kα lines, with equivalent widths greater than 1.5 keV. These large equivalent widths are suggestive of heavier obscuration than that di...
متن کاملThe X–ray Spectrum of Compton–thick Seyfert 2 Galaxies
Current ideas on the X–ray spectrum of Compton–thick Seyfert 2 galaxies are reviewed, and a brief description of the four presently known sources of this class are given.
متن کاملThe hard X–ray spectrum of Compton–thick Seyfert 2 galaxies and the synthesis of the XRB
A synthesis model for the cosmic X–ray Background (XRB) is presented, which includes a proper treatment of Compton scattering in the absorbing matter for type 2 AGN. Evidence for a decrease of the relative importance of type 2 AGN at high redshift is found, which may be due either to a decrease of the relative number of obscured sources, or (more plausibly) to an increase of the fraction of Com...
متن کاملOn X-ray Variability in Seyfert Galaxies
This paper presents a quantification of the X-ray variability amplitude for 79 ASCA observations of 36 Seyfert 1 galaxies. We find that consideration of sources with the narrowest permitted lines in the optical band introduces scatter into the established correlation between X-ray variability and nuclear luminosity. Consideration of the X-ray spectral index and variability properties together s...
متن کاملNuclear obscuration in the high - ionization Seyfert 2 galaxy Tol 0109 – 383
We report the BeppoSAX detection of a hard X-ray excess in the X-ray spectrum of the classical high-ionization Seyfert 2 galaxy Tol 0109–383. The X-ray emission of this source observed below 7 keV is dominated by reflection from both cold and ionized gas, as seen in the ASCA data. The excess hard X-ray emission is presumably due to the central source absorbed by an optically thick obscuring tor...
